I have most of my music only on my ipod not on my itunes library, if I update the software will it wipe all the music?

No as long as its through Itunes then it wont cause your ipod to lose any music.
Both updates for Itunes, Ipods, and iphones are safe and no data will be lost.
I do it often with my ipod and iphone:)

NO it will not, the only time it will is when you add music from a differ computer, i am pretty sure. just in case open your ipod settings in my computer in the folder (make sure you changes your hidden folders to show hidden folders by going to tools folder option then view then go down to show hidden folders) then look for the songs and just add it somewhere just so you wont get confuse your songs will have names like avdf stuff like that good luck. comment if you dont get it
