I was wondering if I could download songs for free off a filesharing program onto my ipod. Would downloading them to my computer first work?

YUP, course you can. as long as they’re the right format. (You would usually find MP3s and MP4s anyway.. they work. WMAs don’t. They’re also pretty common downloads.)
Here’s what you need:
P2P program (i use mp3 rocket its a limewire branch.. great stuff)
iTunes
MP3s downloaded from the P2P
With my P2P the moment it finishes downloading i drag them into iTunes and straight into the playlist i want them to be in. (I also rename the songs straight away.. This is optional though but i like how it looks on the iPod when it’s organized)
You can also drag from the folder where the P2P downloads your files into.
iTunes is great they take care of the rest of the work for you.
Hope I helped. If I missed anything you can ask me.

if you use limewire then you can search it and then right click and go to send to and then it should say itunes.
