there are 2 ways to find the preferences tab. on itunes, it is in the pull-down menu right under the word " itunes" in the upper left corner. once you click on it u’ll see a window that has "check for updates automatically" at the bottom. make sure u have a check mark in the box next to it. then u’ll get updates of itunes automatically. it should ask if u want to update it now.
when u plug ur ipod into the computer, u’ll see on the left side, a list of all things in itunes, including ur ipod. if the ipod isn’t hi lited, click on it. on the main screen, u should see a pic of ur ipod & some tabs going across the top of that window. the first one should be the summary tab. under the summary tab, there is a section in the middle of the window and it has a button that u can click to update the ipod. it says "check for updates". if u don’t see any of these things, you’ll need to go to the itunes website to download a current version of it.
