Basically, I need the specs of a 5th generation 30 gb iPod Video.

How many songs can it hold?
How many videos/movies/tv shows can it hold?
Also, anything else that would be valuable to someone who would like to purchase said iPod and hasn’t previously owned an iPod.

I can’t find this information anywhere!

Thanks!

You can extrapolate based on what the stated capacity for currently sold iPods. If you know what the 32 gb iPod 3rd Gen holds, you can guess that the 30 gb one will hold slightly less.

You can’t really guage how many songs will take up space on a portable player because the size of a song file will depend on

the length of a song and

the bit-rate in which it’s encoded (think about those school pictures that you got years ago – the same picture came in wallet sized and 8 1/2 x 11, but the larger and more detailed picture takes up more space.

My iPod has songs in moderate bit-rate. I have 418 songs amounting to 40 hours of music – that takes up 2.7gb of space. The videos amount to nearly 8 and a half hours taking up 5.25 gb.

It will partially depend on the quality of the bit rate. First a 30GB player is more like 27GB this is because we (humans) count in groups of 10 while computers count in groups of 4. So, 1,000MB to us is actually closer to 975. Also, as with all MP3 players, there is software to tell the iPod how to do the things it does.

As for song quality. The lowest acceptable standard is 128kbps which is about 1MB per minute. Therefore an average 4 minute song will be about 4MB. However, a 320kbps is about 2.5MB per minute, or about 10MB for an average 4 minute song. If most of your music is average at 128kbps, you are look at about 6,750 songs while 320kbps is about 2700. Keep in mind, and iPod Video can also do videos, and pictures, and that will some space up.

As for videos such as TV shows, or movies, expect about 1GB per hour for most non-HD videos. I don’t think your iPod will do HD, but in the future, expect 4GB per hour. This will be for most or all videos.

There is no definitive answer since it varies. It mostly comes down to file size which in the case of songs & videos is affected by song/video length & bit rate. Some songs maybe 5MB, some may be 4MB & they can be any size in between or even less than that or more.

Same applies for videos. Depends on resolution, length, bit rate.

Any numbers anyone says is just an estimate, which in this case is all there is.
